The Comparative Testing Service of the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI-CTS) is a comparative testing service, which provides reference materials for pulp, paper, board and corrugated board mills and convertors, printing industry as well as for suppliers and research institutes. This Round Robin programme is well established within paper and board industry and runs continuously since 1976.

Regular monitoring of the test procedures in your test laboratories, including the condition of the test equipment, personnel qualification, conformity with standards and test procedure, is very important for quality assurance.

Resistance to aging and forgery are highly relevant issues that also affect the paper industry. Requirements are placed on prints and fonts on paper when it comes to the creation and storage of documents, originals or copies thereof, as in the notary’s office. Aging and security also play an important role in packaging printing, especially packaging for prescription drugs or medical devices pose challenges for the pharmaceutical industry with the regulations in place.

Today, the paper industry is confronted with a growing demand for new products using paper and board with enhanced properties and new functionalities.

This complex composition of papers still today presents a great challenge to paper analysis, especially when paper components are present in low concentrations and have to be studied for their microscopic distribution in the paper cross-section. Infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy have great potential for a comprehensive and very specific chemical characterization of paper. Raman microscopy, in particular, offers new possibilities to chemical paper analysis.

We will introduce you the use of IR spectroscopy and Raman microscopy to analyse the detailed chemical composition and structure of paper and paper products. Furthermore, the use of spectroscopic analyses of documents and works of art on paper for their authentication and the detection of forgeries will be demonstrated.
